The Stories We Tell: book talk with Ann Shearer

February 20 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Halesworth Library Book Talk

The Stories We Tell: One of the first things drummed into me as a new reporter was the great editor C.P. Scott’s dictum that ‘Comment is free, but facts are sacred’: the line between objective reporting and subjective opinion was clear. Over the years, that line has become increasingly blurred. ‘Faction’ is now a popular form of drama, and social media turns out an avalanche of personal opinion masquerading as ‘news’. But how clear has the line ever been? Is there such a thing as an objective work of non-fiction? Looking back on my own non-fiction work, I ask myself just how far this, and other peoples’ too, has been autobiography in disguise. And does that matter?

Ann Shearer worked for The Guardian on and off for 20 years, as reporter, social welfare correspondent and page editor, interspersed with freelancing. Since then, she has been a Jungian analyst and psychotherapist, engrossed in stories people tell about themselves. Her books reflect these interests, from Disability, Whose Handicap? (1981) to Why Don’t Psychotherapists Laugh? (2016), with others in between.

The event is free to attend, though donations for refreshments are appreciated. Register if you can (it helps to know how many biscuits to buy!) by speaking to library staff or emailing us at friendsofhalesworthlibrary@gmail.com.
