Totoro – Weekend of events

May 10 @ 10:00 am - May 11 @ 4:00 pm

My Neighbour Totoro

My Neighbour Totoro is a new screening in our popular series of ‘Green Films’, (last year’s events sold-out at The Cut). This time the focus is on children and families. “Thinking about the state of the environment can be challenging for children, but they also embrace opportunity feeling their future, and this film offers us this remarkable nature connection of nature and green spaces,” says Rachel Kellett, the founder of the Halesworth ASH organising group. “This time our ‘Green Films’ engagement activity takes the form of a weekend of activities focused on children, young people and families.”

Saturday:

Kids’ Repair Cafe at The Cut – reflecting a “Make-do and Mend” theme as the town marks the VE Day Anniversary.

Besides being able to make their own 3-D Totoro model, The Repair Café will include mini-workshops on fixing children’s clothes and toys, learning how to string necklaces, “special occasions” card-making, “having a go” on a hand-cranked sewing machine, as well as the opportunity to bring their broken toys and favourite clothes that need mending and understand more about the skills involved.

The afternoon’s events will be launched by the Mini Mouth Theatre Company performing two short pieces devised by the young people of the company in response to the themes of the film

Halesworth Community Choir will perform 3 nature-related songs (including one in Japanese about fireflies!)

Finally….. My Neighbour Totoro the film. £10 for a family of 4, or £3 for single tickets

Sunday:

Millennium Green Event – Halesworth’s very own natural space, managed by the community for the community.

Activities will include story-telling and visualisations in the “Willow Wherry”; time at the “sit spot” to contemplate and engage with nature; pond dipping; willow crafting and an embedding of the themes of My Neighbour Totoro providing inspiration for children – and their parents – going forward.

A relief from the endless doom and gloom, a celebration of some of the amazing community spaces and activities we benefit from here in Halesworth.

The organisers hope we find this weekend a better understanding of how we can collectively help support our natural environment. “We
expect this weekend of events to be very popular” says Rachel Kellett “so be sure to get it in your diary”
